All the news I wish to print

There are all kinds of stories out there. Some will make you laugh, some will make you cry. Some will make you shrug, some will make you scream. Read any daily paper or listen to any newscast and your emotions can go from happy to sad to disbelief to fear to incredulity to horror to anger in very short order.
As we go along, there will be stories, as Paul Harvey used to say, to "wash your ears out with." There will be others that will make you feel like you need to be deloused simply by virtue of having heard or read them. Some posts will be religious, some secular and for some I expect will defy easy classification in either category. I hope you will join me in this journey and please feel free to comment along the way.
For my part I pledge not to remove any posts unless they are vulgar, libelous, threatening or otherwise in violation of the standards of civil discussion. I will not remove any post simply because I disagree with it but I will reserve the right to respond to any challenges that come my way.
God bless you and welcome to my blog.

Congress shall make no law...

It seems that in one particular senior center in Georgia, senior citizens are being told that because a large portion of the cost of their meals is being covered by federal money they are no longer allowed to pray out loud before their meal. Now this did not come about as the result of a complaint by any of the senior citizens that use the center, nor by any of the employees or volunteers that work there but by an executive of the food vendor that supplies the food, one Mr. Tim Rutherford. He claims that he his only obeying federal guidelines that he must observe as a federal contractor. The only problem is that the US Constitution expressly forbids such regulations in the clearest possible language. The founders considered it such an important principle to establish at a time when state sponsored religious persecution was quite common that it gave these words pride of place as the very first words of the Bill of Rights, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." There are no exceptions to this law. None. But then, perhaps its the unambiguous clarity of this legal document that so confounds lawyers and befuddles jurists. The sky is falling, the sky is falling...

"Mike, I think you better get up and see this," my wife called from inside. So I get up and go in the living room where my wife was watching wall to wall coverage of the latest snowstorm to hit our area. It didn't take long to be convinced we were having the worst snowstorm in history and if it didn't let up soon we were all going to die icy deaths. I mean, they even canceled all the afternoon soap operas so reporters could constantly and breathlessly pontificate of the novel phenomenon of snow in February. Now, I know some areas got hit really hard by this storm and my prayers are with the people in those areas affected by this storm but New York City really got off easy. New Yorkers have endured far more severe storms than what hit us today. I am tempted to point out that this wall to wall coverage of snow falling in the wintertime gave the various news organizations something they have not had much of recently-viewers-but that would be cynical.

Sharah Palin

The level of attacks against Sarah Palin is an indication of just how much she threatened the liberal elite in this country. While I am disappointed about her decision I can certainly understand why she made it. As a basicaly decent, hard working woman who strives to live by her principals she was largely unprepared for the vitriol, character assasination and slander that comes with challenging the status quo. What is hilarious is the tsk tsking by the Republican establishment, the same Republican establishment that has bee decidedly luke warm in response to the political campaign of personal destruction launched against Governor Palin almost from the moment of her announcement as Senator McCain's running mate. Of course it is possible that Sarah Palin will be back, but if she is not then teh Republican party will have lost someone who could have been a true leader that would give the party a direction and an identity, two things this rudderless party has been without for far too long.

Miranda goes international

I guess soldiers on the battlefield are going to have to carry Miranda cards with them so they can properly instruct enemy combatants of their civil rights. Now that may sound like the paranoid rantings of some anti-government libertarian this article in The Weekly Standard would seem to indicate that a little paranoia might not be such a bad thing.

Free Enterprise?

How much more of our economy is going to be taken over by the government? The Obama administration has been engaging in a public takeover of private enterprise that should scare the pants off of anyone concerned with the state of our economic system. The disturbing trend of appointing powerful yet unaccountable czars to just about everything should make us fear for our very freedom. And what of the watchdogs of our democracy, the system of checks and balances that is supposed restrain such irresponsible excesses? Well, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for any courageous action on the part of politicians who signed a 700 billion dollar stimulus package without even reading it, let alone debate it. The only thing that can wake up this rubber stamp Congress is if large sections of its body are replaced in the next election cycle. Stay tuned.
